Pasture-Raised Eggs: A Better Egg, A Better System

Now available in Appleton’s Ripon shop.

We’re now proud to stock pasture-raised eggs from Mallard Grange, just five miles from our Ripon shop. These eggs are laid by hens that roam alongside cattle in a regenerative farming system. It’s the kind of food we like—local, thoughtful, and good from the ground up.

What are pasture-raised eggs?

Most eggs in supermarkets are either free-range or barn-reared. In free-range systems, hens might have access to the outdoors; but often that means a static patch of ground, close to the shed, worn out by overuse.

Pasture-raised hens, by contrast, live outside most of the time. At Mallard Grange, the flock is rotated through fresh pasture using a mobile, state-of-the-art laying house. This house follows the cattle through the fields. Hens range widely during the day, then return to lay and roost in safety. The laying house is then moved to new pasture, keeping the land and birds healthy.

Why is this better?

Hens on fresh pasture get a more varied diet, grass, seeds, grubs and that makes a better egg. The birds’ scratching naturally spreads and breaks down cowpats, helping restore soil and keeping fields fertile. It’s nature doing the work.

Importantly, no artificial colouring is added to the feed. So, while these yolks may be paler than some supermarket eggs, they’re honest—just good eggs from a better system.

Regenerative farming in action

Mallard Grange has embraced regenerative farming: a method that rebuilds soil health, stores carbon, and supports wildlife. That includes:

  • Growing cover crops to protect soil through winter

  • Using diverse seed mixes to boost biodiversity

  • Avoiding ploughing, to limit soil disturbance

  • Letting roots stay in the ground

  • Grazing livestock in rotation to mimic nature

The result? Healthier land, less input, and nutrient-dense food.

Eggs with a story

Charles and James Johnson have been farming at Mallard Grange for decades. Their move to regenerative methods isn’t just about sustainability, it’s about independence. By selling direct to businesses like ours, they build a food system rooted in trust and traceability.

We’re proud to support that. You can now buy their pasture-raised eggs in our Ripon shop.

Local. Seasonal. Carefully farmed.
